Review of the telescope
Explore Scientific 0.8x focal reducer and the Air-Spaced Triplet 80-mm FCD-1 Refractor creates a 5-element wide-field astro-imaging system that's ready to reveal wonders of the night sky through astrophotography. Because the focal reducer is removeable, the telescope can transform into a stunning visual instrument by using the included diagonal.
The 0.8x focal reducer turns this f/6 telescope (focal length 480 mm) into an f/4.8 telescope (focal length 384 mm), allowing users a field wide enough to photograph the entirety of the Andromeda Galaxy, the Cygnus Loop, or the Heart Nebula.
The 80 mm aperture allows more light to collect onto your camera sensor than telescopes with smaller apertures. This telescope gathers:
- 1.3 times more light than a 70 mm telescope
- 1.8 times more than a 60 mm telescope
- 2.6 timers more than a 50 mm telescope
The telescope offers true diffraction-limited optics with genuine HOYA FCD1 ED glass.
It's the perfect combination of portability and light-gathering capacity.
Used with the 0.8x focal reducer, this telescope is an air-spaced 5-element optical design that virtually eliminates chromatic aberrations. This telescope generates brilliant high-contrast images by combining genuine HOYA extra-low dispersion (ED) glass and proprietary EMD enhanced multi-layer deposition coatings on all optical surfaces.

From the Astronomy Magazine April, 2017 Review:
…“Then I really went nuts. Or so I thought. I switched to a 3.2mm planetary eyepiece that upped the magnification to 150x, which approached the theoretical upper limit for a 3-inch. When I gazed into the eyepiece, the four members of the Double Double showed surprisingly well, leaving me to wonder what this scope might do on a night of optimal seeing conditions. I have no doubt the ED80 can achieve its advertised resolving limit of 1.45”…. Small and portable, it’s an ideal grab-and-go telescope. It’s also extremely versatile, able to capture wide-field views spanning several degrees while also providing the high power punch to tease out lunar and planetary detail and split close double stars…"
